September 22nd is both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins' birthdays. This week we also celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the publishing of The Hobbit. TheOneRing.net has posted about some of the celebrations occurring around the world today. Unfortunately I'm not aware of large celebrations here. Perhaps someone from our part of the world might drop by and let me know?
We however, observed Hobbit Day by heading out to search for clothes that would be suitable for the Costume Party to be held in Wellington in November, just prior to the World Premiere of the movie. Armed with a very useful reference Vic, Raewyn and Julie from Red Carpet Tours sent us, my Hobbit partner in crime and I ventured out on a tour of the various Op Shops around town. I wasn't sure how successful we would be, but we managed to find a few things that would be suitable .... I hope. My Hobbity partner is a perfect height, and would look hobbity in anything .... we discovered a collarless checked shirt and waistcoat for a start, he has the ears from Weta, and now it just remains to be seen if he can grow enough of his curls back before November (having had them cut off recently). I, on the otherhand, am too old and shortsighted for an elf (and I'm scared of heights, so tree dwelling is not an option); I'm not going as an orc or goblin, so I may just go as a tallish Hobbit woman or woman of Bree/Rohan/Esgaroth. Not sure ....
As any reader of this blog can see, the "timeline" tends to take up all my posting time at the moment. I thought post production would be quiet, but how wrong could I be! I will resume my posts about the book .... when time permits ... Coincidentally, the last post appears to be close to where the first movie finishes, so I have time to write about the next few chapters before the second one is released. (Sir Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have complicated my life by announcing a third movie ... that means the timeline will have to continue!!).
We are now counting down the weeks before the Premiere. My work colleagues think we are insane when I tell them what we are doing, but I think it will be fun. Whether I get my copy of The Hobbit signed remains to be seen however .... somehow the red carpet looks as if it will be pretty crowded, and I'm not at all pushy. Regardless, we will take the camera and post pictures up here when the adventure begins!
MTA: I forgot to add the links to costumes, so here they are:
1. The Middle-Earth Weekend 2012 - Costumes
2. Lord of The Rings Costume from alleycatscratch.com/lotr/ Great info - thanks to the researchers!
3. Weta (of course!) - Hobbit Ears (Sam's and Frodo's)
4. Wigs and feet ... I haven't found any really good sources yet. Our local party supplies shop has a female curly wig ... it's not suitable for my hobbit partner however (too long and curly). As for the feet ...... no idea!!
5. T-shirts. I am going to try my hand at making a special T-shirt for the occasion for Hobbity partner and me ... well, invent an iron on transfer for T-shirt. (Note to self: Allocate time between now and then!!!). Dwarf runes may feature ..... (on my shirt)
One more addition ... Sir Peter Jackson added this great poster of Bilbo on his Facebook page, three hours ago as I write this.
