Thorin Oakenshield:
"If More of Us Valued Food and Cheer and Song above Hoarded Gold, it would be a Merrier World."
J.R.R. Tolkien.
Hobbits love their food and we are told that BagEnd had cellars and "pantries (lots of these)". There are a number of articles on the internet dedicated to food Hobbits eat (or may have eaten). Here are a few links:
1. Tea in Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' by HistoricalFoods
This article goes into wonderful detail of all the food and drink mentioned in Chapter 1 along with recipes and pictures.
2. "Well-stocked larders: Food and Diet of Hobbits" by Stephanie Green on the "Strange Horizons" site.
Recipe here thanks to HistoricalFoods site
Thanks for linking these articles. Those recipes look yummy. I might have to try some of these - i.e. seed cake (not what I expected when I read TH). The pork pie makes me think of the meat pie that Anne's sister eats when Anne first arrives in the Amanda Root version of Jane Austen's Persuasion.
I guess I must be a Hobbit, I'd love to be able to eat six meals a day (and not balloon).
