Newcastle turtle

You never know what you will see in Newcastle Harbour! I am not sure what species of turtle this is - any help in identification would be appreciated.Img_2452

Two sea eagles and a magpie

Two sea eagles visiting Strzlecki Lookout last Sunday, a magpie tried to see them off, perhaps protecting a nest, I suspect unsuccessfully.

Turtle hatchlings

Lady_elliot_island_64

On our first day on Lady Elliot Island we met these turtle hatchlings. They had hatched ealier in the day and the island managers had collected them so they could be released in the evening less visible to predators. It is important for the development of their navigation systems that they make their own way from the hatching site to the water's edge. They took about half an hour to traverse the 10 metres of sand and then they kept getting washed back onto the beach. Eventually they made deep water - let's hope for their survival.
