We did not visit Lady Elliot Island in breeding season and were told by staff that it is a completely different Island in the summer. Reportedly 100,000 birds nest on the island in the summer...... We did however spot a few species. At sunset every evening, the black noddys
fly home to the island after a day at sea. There were quite literally thousand of birds first noticed whirling in a great flock on the horizon gradually making their way to roost in the trees. Also (not photographed) were a pair of red tailed tropic birds who had decided to nest under one of the resort buildings.
This sooty oyster catcher had lost its mate and remains on the island to keep company with a pair of pied oyster catchers.
Buff-banded rails are everywhere and even venture into the dining room to sneak a few snacks.
White and grey egrets wade in the shallow waters of the reef looking for fish.
