Where We Are
This is the first post in our weblog. Mulubinba is a name which has strong links with Newcastle - our particular place in the world. Newcastle is approximately 150km north of Sydney. It is a city with a very mixed and changing economic base having been largely industrial in the past. It is a port with large coal exports, university city, and gateway to the Hunter Valley which is famed for its wines. It has many hidden facades (environmental, political, social, spiritual) - we hope to share some of them in this weblog and give readers (if any emerge) both near and far, a glimpse of how we live.
Hello! I got here via Ecotone. I live in Scotland but visited Newcastle two years ago to stay with Ron and Louise Woodcock. I think Ron might have played the violin at the catherdral. Louise was at school with my mom in South Africa about 50 years ago and they still keep in touch.
I really enjoyed my visit to Newcastle and we had a lovely walk out to the lighthouse.

I really like your blog. You seem to have a well rounded lifestyle. It's one of the first blogs I'll actually bookmark.

Hello Novocastrians all, if you go to the above website you will see my home of the past 25 years in Greece. The current shot on the homepage is from my terrace. Anyhow...life in utopia was not smooth and I am starting anew here in Newcastle with my 9 year old son. I am thinking of buying a house on Stockton...any comments? Advice?

Stockton, eh? I'm not sure why you might have chosen Stockton, but its pretty nice (and pretty pricey) over there, depending on where you buy. Mind you, even the backstreets are bringing over $400k now. Stocktonians tend to be a somewhat insular bunch though, so if you want to socialise there, it will take years to break in, and you probably won't ever be considered "local" no matter how long you are there. This is what I am told by those who have tried. On the other hand, locals who were born there are always local no matter where they live. They're a weird mob.
Its a good choice if you can deal with all that. Why Stockton, anyway? Consider looking around Westlakes, if you want waterfront.

Thanks to Kyte - I looked up Westlakes in Domain.com.au and Realestate.com.au etc. and it does not come up as a suburb? But if it is in the lake Macquarie region, I think it would be too far from Newcastle Grammar school to ferry my son in and then double back to university each day. Yes? I am not an experienced driver.
I do appreciate your response though and will explain; I live in Cooks Hill and have made friends here. I dont think I can go further out than Hamilton. Stockton appealed because a) it is truly a weird place and I have lived in weird, eccentric places all my life and b) it is a ferry ride to everything we know, including schools and only 14 minutes to university. I also liked its village atmosphere. I have good friends from University that are Stocktonians too.

Visiting your site reminds me of the times I spent in Spain, Australia, New Zealand, and Wales. I think you have an excellent eye for photography. Thank you for sharing.
